Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

To preserve the authenticity and quality of our stunning destination, we are committed to preserving and giving back to the distinct local culture, natural environment and community development of Mombasa.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Meet and interact with local artisans at the weekly ‘Lamu Market' held in the centre of the Serena Mombasa Beach Hotel's property. Guests can see and purchase locally produced and traditional Swahili handicrafts in an authentic atmosphere amidst coconut palms and gain a better understanding of the local environment and people while supporting local production. Guests also have the chance to mingle with the local community on a daily basis as much of the staff and entertainers at Serena Beach Hotel grew up in Mombasa. All of the hotel's meals are prepared with locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as fresh seafood caught by local fishermen in the hotel's restaurants to give you a true taste of Mombasa. The hotel is equally concerned with the well-being of the local community outside of the hotel and works with them to improve schools, roads, and basic water and health services.

The hotel's design and construction were fashioned in an environmentally conscious manner using local sustainable materials and builders. All of the buildings and grounds are maintained to blend effortlessly into the local scenery and much of the artwork, crafts, and furniture used in the decoration of the resort were created by members of the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya.

Serena Mombasa Beach Hotel
is also concerned with local eco-systems and habitats and cares for endangered species. The hotel has created a reproduction program for more than 12 species of endangered forest butterflies in the region known as the Butterfly Project and has, since 1993, been working with the Kenya Sea Turtle Conservation Committee to preserve seven species of sea turtle nesting sites. The hotel also contributes towards local fund-raising projects and encourages the guests to visit local attractions such as the Bamburi Nature Trail and the Ngomongo Cultural Village.
