Severin Sea Lodge
Sustainability
Founded by Rudolf Schulte senior in the late sixties when he first set foot on the shores of Kenya, today Severin Sea Lodge is run by his son Severin Shulte and his team.
The love of Kenya led the Shulte family to establish a number of tourist facilities in the region from a four star city hotel to a safari camp in the Tsavo National Park.
Whether staying at Severin Sea Lodge or any of their other facilities, the team motto is to ensure their guests are seduced by the excitement and beauty of Kenya.
To quote Severin Shulte... "The satisfaction of our guests is our motivation".
Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Caring for the environment and local community.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Staying at the Severin Sea Lodge not only provides guests with hospitality and ideal location on Bamburi Beach, but also allows guests to interact with locals and support the local Mij Wa Salama Orphanage.
The Severin Group has a strong commitment to supporting their local community and protecting the environment so future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty of Kenya.
Severin Sea Lodge supports the local Mij Wa Salama Orphanage, which provides food, clothing, shelter and an education for abandoned and abused children and relies solely on donations. The support is led by Mrs Cornelia Shulte, wife of the managing director and Mrs Inge Hoffman, who tirelessly lead the fund raising activities from organising charity balls to arranging cooperation with schools in Germany, to raise funds for the orphanage.
This support together with other donations ensures the children have a future, live in an environment where they get love and affection, have 3 meals a day, get proper medical attention and an education.
The Lodge also believes it has a responsibility to work with nature as an equal partner to protect the environment for future generations to enjoy. Specifically it has implemented the following practices:
- Employs a full time staff to implement the environmental policies of the lodge in all its activities.
- Conducts regular seminars for guests, staff and suppliers to educate them on good environmental practices.
- Installed a biological water treatment plant so waste water is cleansed before it returns to ground water or the surrounding sea.
- Recycles waste and food scraps.
- Collects and sends used batteries to Germany for disposal.
- Uses only paper bags for guests laundry.
- Directs suppliers to deliver goods in biologically disposable or returnable containers.
- Installed solar panels and power saving devices throughout the lodge, to minimize power usage.
